Anfield is one of the most iconic and atmospheric football stadiums in the world, home to Liverpool FC since the club's formation in 1892. Located in the Anfield district of Liverpool approximately two miles northeast of the city centre, the ground has witnessed more than 130 years of football history and stands today as a cathedral of the game. Originally built in 1884, Anfield first served as the home of Everton FC before a dispute with the landlord led to Liverpool FC being founded in 1892 specifically to use the ground. Under legendary managers including Bill Shankly, Bob Paisley, Kenny Dalglish, Rafa Benitez, and Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool have lifted six European Cups, 20 league titles, and a host of domestic honours, with Anfield serving as the fortress that underpinned each era of success. The stadium has evolved dramatically over its 140-year history. The Spion Kop — one of football's most famous stands — was built in 1906 and became synonymous with the passionate, vocal culture of Liverpool supporters. It underwent further development through the 1990s when it became an all-seater stand with a capacity of approximately 12,500. The Main Stand was comprehensively rebuilt between 2014 and 2016, adding a third tier and increasing its capacity to accommodate over 20,000 supporters, while simultaneously bringing world-class facilities including premium hospitality lounges, media facilities, and the LFC Museum. The most recent transformation came with the redevelopment of the Anfield Road Stand, which was announced in 2021 and completed in 2024 despite setbacks when the original contractor, Buckingham Group, entered administration in 2023. A new contractor, Raynor Rowen, completed the expanded stand, adding approximately 7,000 seats — including 5,200 general admission and 1,800 hospitality seats — and pushing Anfield's total capacity to 61,276, making it the fourth largest stadium in the Premier League. Anfield is renowned for its electric atmosphere, particularly on European nights when 'You'll Never Walk Alone' rings out from 61,000 voices. The famous 'This Is Anfield' sign in the players' tunnel, which visiting teams must walk beneath before stepping onto the pitch, has become one of football's most recognisable symbols. Two gates at the stadium bear the names of legendary managers Shankly and Paisley, with bronze statues of both men standing outside the ground. Beyond matchdays, Anfield attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors annually for stadium tours, museum visits, and community events. The LFC Museum, located in the Main Stand, houses the club's complete trophy collection including all six European Cups, and features interactive displays covering the full sweep of the club's history. Tours operate seven days a week and take visitors through the players' tunnel, dressing rooms, press conference room, and managerial dugout. A new Champions 2024/25 exhibition was added to the museum following Liverpool's Premier League title win under Arne Slot. The surrounding area of Anfield has undergone significant regeneration in recent years, with new housing and improved public spaces complementing the stadium's expansion.
