Circular bowl design — four curved stands meeting seamlessly under the continuous iconic Teflon fibreglass roof, with no corners, creating a perfect acoustic and sightline environment
DHL Stadium was designed by GMP Architects (Germany) in collaboration with Cape Town-based Louis Karol Architects and Point Architects, and built by Murray & Roberts/WBHO at a cost of R4.4 billion. The stadium's most iconic feature is its Teflon-coated fibreglass roof — resembling a giant white shell or sail inspired by the fynbos of the Cape Floral Kingdom — that covers all 55,000 seats while allowing natural light to filter through. The roof panels are translucent and glow spectacularly under floodlights at night. The stadium bowl configuration includes 240 executive suites across four levels (Level 5: 110 suites, Level 6: 56 suites, Level 7: 48 suites, Level 8: 26 suites) plus 10 open blocks for general admission. The playing surface is natural grass 125m x 68m. The stadium sits on the Green Point waterfront alongside the Atlantic Ocean, with Table Mountain (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) as the backdrop behind the South Stand. The Green Point Urban Park (a major green space created as part of the 2010 World Cup legacy) surrounds the stadium on three sides. The original Green Point Stadium (1897-2007) stood on the same site and was partly demolished to make way for the new venue.
DHL Stadium is one of the most architecturally spectacular sports venues in the world — a stunning 55,000-capacity modern stadium on the Green Point waterfront in Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa, with the iconic Table Mountain as its breathtaking backdrop. Built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup at a cost of R4.4 billion (USD$600 million), the stadium opened on 14 December 2009 and was designed by GMP Architects, Louis Karol Architects, and Point Architects. The venue's most iconic feature is its Teflon-coated fibreglass roof — resembling a giant white shell or sail — that covers all 55,000 seats while allowing natural light to filter through. Owned by the City of Cape Town and operated by Cape Town Stadium (RF) SOC Limited, the ground was renamed DHL Stadium in June 2021 following a multi-year naming rights partnership with global logistics company DHL International GmbH. In 2021, the DHL Stormers and WP Rugby moved from the historic Newlands Stadium (home from 1888) to make DHL Stadium their new permanent home. The stadium hosted 8 FIFA World Cup matches in 2010 (including a quarter-final between Argentina and Germany) plus the famous 2020 Match in Africa — a charity tennis match between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal that drew 51,000 fans and set the world record for the highest ever attendance at a tennis event. The DHL Stormers won the 2022 URC Grand Final (their first ever title) on home soil at DHL Stadium — one of the defining moments in the venue's rugby history.
The Green Point site has hosted sporting events since 1897, when the original Green Point Stadium was built with an 18,000-seat capacity. The original ground was partly demolished in 2007 to make way for the new 2010 FIFA World Cup stadium, and was rebuilt as the Green Point Athletics Stadium in 2013. Construction of the current DHL Stadium broke ground on 26 March 2007, with main contractors Murray & Roberts and WBHO completing the R4.4 billion project in time for its 14 December 2009 opening — just weeks before the 2010 World Cup. The architects — GMP from Germany, and Cape Town-based Louis Karol Architects and Point Architects — created a structure that paid homage to the fynbos of the Cape Floral Kingdom with its distinctive Teflon-coated fibreglass roof panels. In June 2010, the stadium hosted 8 FIFA World Cup matches including the group stage (including Uruguay vs France, opening match to 64,000 — a crowd never matched since), and a quarter-final between Argentina and Germany. Following the World Cup, the stadium struggled to find an anchor tenant and ran at significant City of Cape Town subsidy. Cape Town City F.C. moved in from 2016. On 7 February 2020, the legendary Match in Africa tennis exhibition between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal attracted 51,000 fans and set the world record for highest ever tennis attendance. In March 2021, the DHL Stormers and WP Rugby announced their move from the historic Newlands Stadium to DHL Stadium. On 29 September 2021, DHL International GmbH announced a multi-year naming rights deal, renaming Cape Town Stadium as DHL Stadium from 1 June 2021. The Stormers immediately became one of the most compelling teams in the new URC era, winning the 2022 URC Grand Final over the Bulls on home soil — the first URC title for the franchise.
DHL Stadium offers arguably the most visually spectacular matchday setting in world rugby — 55,000 fans packed into a gleaming white architectural masterpiece with Table Mountain directly behind the South Stand and the Atlantic Ocean visible from the upper tiers. The famous Stormers supporter culture — passionate Western Cape fans in their blue and black jerseys, singing "Di Stormers, die Stormers" — fills the enormous bowl with a wall of noise on big URC and European nights. The move from intimate Newlands (51,900 capacity, beloved but ageing) to the world-class DHL Stadium initially divided supporters, but the Stormers' 2022 URC title win at the ground — in front of a packed Cape Town crowd — transformed it overnight into the spiritual heart of Western Province rugby. The backdrop of Table Mountain at sunset on a warm Cape Town evening, combined with the unique open-bowl sound and the sea breeze from the Atlantic, makes a DHL Stadium matchday one of the most memorable experiences in all of sport.
The DHL Stadium Guided Tour is a 90-minute behind-the-scenes experience of one of the world's most architecturally stunning sports venues. Adult tickets approximately R150, child R75, with family rates available. Tours run Monday to Friday, typically at 10am and 2pm, subject to availability — not available on Stormers matchdays, training days, concerts, or major events. The tour takes visitors through the Stormers home dressing room, the famous players' tunnel, pitchside on the grass surface with Table Mountain as the backdrop, the 2010 FIFA World Cup heritage displays, the 2022 URC Championship trophy, the premium executive suites at multiple levels, the press conference room, and the spectacular upper concourse with panoramic views across Table Bay, Robben Island, and the Atlantic Ocean. Visitors hear the story of the stadium's construction (2007-2009), the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the record-breaking 2020 Federer vs Nadal Match in Africa, the Stormers' move from Newlands in 2021, and the 2022 URC Grand Final triumph. Book via dhlstadium.co.za or by phone +27 21 417 0101. The tour is wheelchair accessible with prior notification.
DHL Stadium features heritage displays throughout the concourses, hospitality areas, and dedicated display spaces celebrating the stadium's history and the DHL Stormers. Key displays cover: the 2010 FIFA World Cup (8 matches hosted, including Argentina v Germany quarter-final and the opening match Uruguay v France drawing 64,000); the 2020 Match in Africa world-record tennis event (Federer v Nadal, 51,000 attendance); the DHL Stormers' move from Newlands in 2021 and the historic 2022 URC Grand Final victory (18-13 over the Bulls); and the architectural story of the iconic Teflon fibreglass roof structure. The Stormers' 2022 URC Championship trophy is prominently displayed. Heritage displays also celebrate the franchise's history from the founding of the Western Province Rugby Union in 1883 through the Super Rugby era (1997-2021) at the historic Newlands Stadium.
Cape Town Railway Station is the main rail hub for the city, approximately 12km from DHL Stadium in Green Point. Operated by Metrorail Western Cape, the station connects to southern suburbs, the Cape Flats, and the Garden Route. However, for the Green Point stadium, the MyCiTi Bus is a far more practical option than rail. Long-distance intercity coaches (Greyhound, Intercape, FlixBus SA) terminate at the Cape Town Tourism coach terminal on Adderley Street, 12km from the stadium.
The MyCiTi Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Route 104 runs directly past DHL Stadium from central Cape Town — the easiest and most recommended public transport option for matchgoers. Route 104 connects the CBD (Cape Town Station, Adderley Street, Hertzog Boulevard) along the Atlantic Seaboard via De Waterkant, Green Point, and Sea Point. The DHL Stadium stop is on Fritz Sonnenberg Road directly outside the venue. A standard single fare is approximately R10-R20, using the myconnect card (available from MyCiTi stations). Journey time from Cape Town CBD is approximately 15-20 minutes.
DHL Stadium is easily accessed from the N1 and N2 motorways into Cape Town, and the De Waal Drive (M3) and Eastern Boulevard (N2) via the Foreshore. From the N1, take the Fan Walk/Strand Street exit heading towards the Waterfront and Green Point. The stadium is on Fritz Sonnenberg Road in Green Point. CRITICALLY: there is very limited on-site parking at DHL Stadium — visitors are strongly encouraged to park in Green Point, the V&A Waterfront area (multiple large car parks within 1.5km), or in the City Bowl and take MyCiTi Bus or walk. On Cape Town Derby/South African Shield matchdays, the entire Green Point/Sea Point area becomes extremely congested from 90 minutes before kick-off.
DHL Stadium has one of the most spectacular walking approaches in world sport. From the V&A Waterfront (the Cape Town Tourist hub) it is approximately 1.5km (18-minute walk) along the Green Point waterfront promenade with Table Mountain ahead and the Atlantic Ocean alongside. From the Cape Town City Bowl and Long Street (the tourist hub) it is approximately 3-4km (40-50 minutes). The Green Point Urban Park (immediately adjacent to the stadium) is a beautiful pre-match gathering spot.

Adult tickets approximately R150, child R75.
