Fiserv Forum was born of necessity and vision. The Milwaukee Bucks were playing in the BMO Harris Bradley Center (opened 1988), which no longer met NBA standards for premium facilities. The momentum for a new arena grew significantly in 2013 when NBA Commissioner Adam Silver indicated a new facility was essential for the Bucks' future in Milwaukee — raising fears of relocation. New ownership (led by Marc Lasry and Wes Edens) took over in 2014 and committed to building a new arena. Fiserv, Inc. — a Brookfield-based financial services company — secured 25-year naming rights before the arena opened. Construction began in June 2016 and the arena officially opened on August 26, 2018, with a preseason game against the Charlotte Hornets. The arena was designed by Populous (global sports venue specialists) and EUA (Milwaukee-based architects), who created a design intended to reflect Milwaukee's rivers and lakes (curvilinear roof) while connecting to the city's brick-and-industry heritage (Cream City brick). The result has won multiple design and fan experience awards. In only its third year of operation, Fiserv Forum hosted the climax of the Milwaukee Bucks' 2020–21 NBA Championship run — with Giannis Antetokounmpo's extraordinary 50-point Game 6 performance on July 20, 2021, giving Milwaukee its first NBA title since 1971 and making the Deer District watch parties internationally famous.
