Headingley Cricket Ground is one of England's most beloved and storied cricket venues — a compact, atmospheric ground in the leafy suburb of Headingley, three miles north of Leeds city centre, that has been the scene of some of the most celebrated moments in Test cricket history. Opened in 1890 and hosting Test matches since 1899, the ground sits within the unique dual-sports Headingley Stadium complex, sharing a two-sided main stand with the AMT Headingley Rugby Stadium. The Howard Stand uniquely offers views of both the cricket and rugby grounds simultaneously — a configuration found nowhere else in world sport. The 18,350-capacity ground has witnessed Don Bradman's 309 in a single day (1930), the miraculous Botham's Ashes in 1981, and the 2023 Ashes Test. SunRisers Leeds — formerly Northern Superchargers — bring The Hundred to Headingley each August, with the women's team having won The Hundred title in 2025. In August 2025, Headingley became the first sports venue in the world to partner with WelcoMe, delivering personalised accessibility services. The on-site Headingley Lodge hotel provides pitch-view rooms for overnight visitors.
Yorkshire CCC began playing at Headingley in 1891. The first Test was in 1899. Don Bradman scored 309 in a day in 1930 — the most ever in a single Test day. The 1981 Ashes "Botham's Test" — England won from 500/1 — is the most dramatic in the ground's history. Yorkshire purchased the freehold in 2005. Successive redevelopments in 2011, 2015, and 2017–19 expanded and modernised the ground. The Northern Superchargers franchise (now SunRisers Leeds) has played here since 2021. In 2025 the women's team won The Hundred title and the franchise rebranded as SunRisers Leeds from 2026.
Headingley generates an intimate, passionate atmosphere that belies its modest capacity. The Western Terrace and North East Lower are the vocal heartlands of Yorkshire support. SunRisers Leeds Hundred fixtures are lively family occasions enriched by the vibrant Headingley village neighbourhood. The free Indoor Family Zone in the East Stand Long Room is one of The Hundred's best family spaces. The Skyrack and Original Oak pubs on Otley Road create a natural pre-match hub minutes from the ground.
Headingley Cricket Ground is best reached by train via Burley Park station on the Harrogate Line, which is just a 5-minute walk from the ground — the closest and most recommended train option from Leeds City Station. Trains run half-hourly from Leeds City Station and the journey takes approximately 4–5 minutes to Burley Park. Alternatively, Headingley station is on the same Harrogate Line and is a 10-minute walk from the ground (note: the initial part of this walk is slightly uphill). Trains from Leeds to Headingley station take approximately 12 minutes. Leeds City Station is the main national rail hub, served by services from London King's Cross (approx. 2 hours 15 minutes), Manchester Victoria (approx. 55 minutes), Birmingham New Street (approx. 1 hour 45 minutes), and Edinburgh (approx. 2 hours 15 minutes).
Multiple First Leeds bus routes serve Headingley Stadium directly from Leeds city centre. Services 19 and 19A run every 15 minutes from Leeds city centre with stops at Stand F7 (York Street, opposite Leeds Bus Station), Stand K13 (Kirkgate), Stand K17 (Duncan Street), Stand S10 (outside Leeds Railway Station), and Stand D (Infirmary Street). Service 56 runs every 10 minutes from Stand G6 (Eastgate) and Stand J1 (Albion Street). Routes 22, 23, 24, 25, and 27 also serve the Headingley area from various parts of Leeds. The Headingley Stadium bus stop is immediately adjacent to the ground, making buses a very convenient option from all parts of Leeds.
Headingley Cricket Ground is approximately 3 miles north of Leeds city centre. From the M1 or M62, take the M621 and exit at Junction 2, then follow signs for Headingley Rugby Stadium via the A643 (A58). Continue on Kirkstall Road (A65) towards the A660 Otley Road, then follow signposting to the Headingley area. A small number of car parking spaces are available at Car Park K (pay on the day: £10 for cars, £15 for minibuses). Car Park F is reserved exclusively for pre-paid Blue Badge vehicles. Pre-booking for Car Park K is available and recommended for popular matches. Car parks J and K open 30 minutes before gates. Street parking in surrounding residential areas is very limited on matchdays.
The most convenient walking route is from Burley Park station: exit the station and walk east along Cardigan Road, then turn right onto St Michael's Lane — a flat, 5-minute walk that brings you directly to the cricket ground's main entrance. From Headingley station, walk south on Otley Road into the Headingley village area, then continue to St Michael's Lane (approximately 10 minutes, with a short uphill section). From Leeds city centre, the walk takes approximately 45–50 minutes along the A660 Otley Road — a pleasant route through Woodhouse and Headingley village. Cycle racks are available at the North East concourse and by the Trueman Enclosure for cyclists.
