The Kia Oval is one of the most iconic cricket venues in the world — a ground with a skyline unlike any other, dominated by the Grade II-listed Victorian gasholders that have watched over Kennington since 1847. Established in 1845 and home to Surrey County Cricket Club since its opening, the ground hosted the very first Test match played on English soil in September 1880, when England faced Australia. In 1882, Australia's famous Oval victory gave birth to the Ashes — cricket's greatest rivalry. Today, the 27,500-capacity venue is the home of Oval Invincibles — back-to-back men's Hundred champions in 2023 and 2024 — and also hosts The Hundred Eliminator each August. A 2-minute walk from Oval tube station on the Northern line, the Kia Oval is one of the most accessible major cricket grounds in Britain. Surrey CCC is committed to Net Zero carbon emissions by 2030, with compostable cups and sustainable operations already in place across matchday operations.
Surrey County Cricket Club took up residence at the Oval in 1845. The ground hosted England's first international football match against Scotland in 1870, the inaugural FA Cup Final in 1872, and the first Test match in England in 1880. The Grade II-listed Victoria Gasholder No. 1, built in 1847 — the largest of its kind in the world — has provided the Oval's iconic backdrop ever since. In 1882, the Ashes were born following Australia's famous 7-run victory at the Oval, after a mock Sporting Times obituary mourned the death of English cricket. The Peter May Stand was reconstructed in 2015–2016, increasing capacity to 27,500. The Oval Invincibles joined as a Hundred franchise in 2021, winning back-to-back men's titles in 2023 and 2024.
The atmosphere at the Kia Oval is shaped by its unique physical setting — the gasholders rising beyond the Vauxhall End create a visual backdrop unlike any other ground in the world. Oval Invincibles fixtures bring a festival energy to Kennington, with live music, the Family Zone in the JM Finn Stand, and near-capacity crowds. The ground also hosts The Hundred Eliminator, one of the most intense occasions in the competition's calendar. Fans consistently praise the excellent sightlines, quick concourse access, and variety of food and drink options.
The Kia Oval is one of the most accessible cricket grounds in England by public transport. Oval tube station on the Northern Line is just 100 metres from the main entrance — a 2-minute walk — making it the closest tube station to any major London cricket ground. The Northern Line connects directly from King's Cross St Pancras, Euston, London Bridge, Waterloo, and Bank without a change. Vauxhall Station (Victoria Line underground and National Rail) is approximately a 10-minute walk from the ground and provides additional connections from Victoria, Brixton, Clapham Junction, and Waterloo. Both stations are well signed for the Oval on matchdays.
Bus routes 36, 185, and 436 stop directly outside the Kia Oval on Harleyford Road and Kennington Oval, making them the most convenient bus options for visitors. Route 36 runs from Queens Park through Paddington, Marble Arch, Victoria, and Vauxhall to New Cross — ideal for fans arriving from west or central London. Route 185 connects Victoria to Lewisham via Vauxhall and Kennington. Route 436 runs from Paddington to Lewisham via Victoria. Additional routes stopping within a 5-minute walk include the 3, 59, 109, 133, 159, and 333, providing connections from Waterloo, Brixton, Elephant & Castle, and Clapham. All London buses are contactless/Oyster only — no cash accepted.
No match-day parking is available at or in the vicinity of the Kia Oval, and Surrey CCC strongly advises all visitors to use public transport. The area is within the London Congestion Charge Zone (charges apply Monday–Friday 7am–6pm) and the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ). Residents' parking restrictions operate on surrounding streets on matchdays. Blue Badge holders in the London Borough of Lambeth are entitled to park free of charge on side streets near the Kia Oval under their Blue Badge entitlement, but spaces are unmanaged. Matchday Blue Badge car parking at the ground itself must be booked in advance — bookings open four weeks before each fixture.
The Kia Oval's central south London location makes it easily reachable on foot from several popular areas. From Oval tube station: 2 minutes along Harleyford Road. From Vauxhall station: 10 minutes north along Harleyford Road. From Waterloo Station: approximately 25 minutes walking south across Lambeth Bridge or via the South Bank to Vauxhall. From Elephant & Castle (Northern, Bakerloo, and National Rail): approximately 15 minutes walking west along Kennington Park Road. Santander Cycle docking stations are available near Vauxhall and Kennington for those wishing to cycle, and the ground is easily reachable from the Thames riverside cycling routes.

The Victorian gasholders that tower over the Vauxhall End of the Kia Oval are one of cricket's most recognisable sights. The main gasholder (Victoria Gasholder No. 1) was built in 1847 and was the largest of its kind in the world at the time of construction. Now Grade II listed, it was rebuilt between 1877 and 1879 and has been a permanent backdrop to Oval cricket ever since. The gasholders received protected status in recognition of their historical, architectural, and technical significance.
The Oval hosted the first ever Test match played in England in September 1880, when England faced Australia. Two years later in 1882, Australia's famous victory at the Oval — by just 7 runs — prompted a mock obituary in the Sporting Times mourning the death of English cricket, with the humorous suggestion that the ashes of English cricket would be taken to Australia. This gave birth to the Ashes, cricket's most celebrated rivalry.

The project increased the ground's overall capacity towards the current 27,500 figure and added expanded welfare facilities, additional bar concourses, and improved accessibility provisions.
