Scotiabank Arena stands as Canada's premier sports and entertainment venue, serving as the proud home of the Toronto Raptors since 1999 while representing the global reach and multicultural spirit of the NBA. Originally opened as Air Canada Centre on February 19, 1999, this $288 million architectural gem at 40 Bay Street was renamed Scotiabank Arena in 2018, maintaining its status as one of North America's finest sporting venues. With a basketball capacity of 19,800, the arena creates an electric atmosphere that has witnessed historic moments, including the Raptors' 2019 NBA Championship celebration that united an entire nation behind Canada's only NBA franchise. Scotiabank Arena's innovative design incorporates elements of the original Canada Post Delivery Building, blending heritage Art Deco architecture β including a distinctive limestone facade β with modern functionality to create a uniquely Canadian venue. The facility's location in Toronto's South Core neighbourhood provides seamless access to the city's financial district, entertainment venues, and waterfront attractions, making every game part of a broader Toronto experience. Scotiabank Arena's commitment to excellence extends beyond basketball, serving as home to the Toronto Maple Leafs (NHL) and Toronto Rock (NLL) while hosting world-class concerts and international events. The venue features 154 luxury suites, 97 executive suites, and premium amenities including the exclusive Sher Club and the Air Canada Signature Club. Recognised with over 40 industry awards and having welcomed more than 39 million fans across 2,600-plus events, Scotiabank Arena is Canada's highest-grossing arena and one of the world's most successful entertainment venues.
Scotiabank Arena was built on the site of the former Toronto Postal Delivery Building in Toronto's South Core, and uniquely incorporated elements of the original Art Deco structure β including its distinctive limestone facade and limestone sculpture series β into the new arena design. The project represented a landmark of heritage preservation in Canadian urban architecture. The arena opened as Air Canada Centre on February 19, 1999, with a Toronto Maple Leafs game against the Montreal Canadiens as the first sporting event. The Toronto Raptors played their first game in the new arena on February 21, 1999. Before the current venue, the Raptors played at the SkyDome (now Rogers Centre) and briefly at Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens. The arena was renamed Scotiabank Arena in July 2018 after the Bank of Nova Scotia (Scotiabank) acquired naming rights in a deal valued at approximately $800 million over 20 years. In 2019, the arena hosted two NBA Finals games during the Raptors' historic championship run β the first and only NBA title won by a team outside the United States. The "Jurassic Park" fan gatherings in Maple Leaf Square outside the arena during the 2019 playoffs became iconic global images of basketball passion and Canadian national pride. The arena is owned and operated by Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE), one of Canada's most valuable sports organisations, which also owns the Raptors, Maple Leafs, Toronto FC (MLS), and Toronto Argonauts (CFL).
A Raptors game at Scotiabank Arena is a celebration of Canada's multicultural basketball culture. The arena's fanbase is among the most diverse in the NBA, reflecting Toronto's status as one of the world's most multicultural cities. Pre-game, fans fill Real Sports Bar & Grill in Maple Leaf Square, which serves as the arena's unofficial outdoor living room. In warmer months, the Maple Leaf Square plaza hosts outdoor watch parties and fan gatherings that extend the arena experience beyond its walls β the famous "Jurassic Park" tradition born during the 2019 championship run has become a permanent part of Raptors culture. Inside, the all-black atmosphere, the premium Sher Club (co-designed with Drake, Canada's most globally famous Raptors fan), and the championship banners from 2019 create a unique environment. For the most electric atmosphere, attend games when the Raptors host divisional rivals like the Boston Celtics or New York Knicks, or any game when the team is in playoff contention.
