Tannadice Park, officially known as the CalForth Construction Arena at Tannadice Park for sponsorship reasons, is one of Scottish football's most distinctive venues. Located on Tannadice Street in Dundee, the stadium has been the home of Dundee United Football Club since 1909 when the club was founded as Dundee Hibernian. With a capacity of 14,223, Tannadice is all-seated and features four stands: the two-tier George Fox Stand (east, opened 1992, named after former chairman George Fox), the Jerry Kerr Stand (south, renamed in 2003 to honour the former player and manager), the Jim McLean Stand, and the West Stand. The most extraordinary geographical fact about Tannadice is its proximity to Dens Park — home of city rivals Dundee FC — which lies just 200 yards (183 metres) away. This makes the two grounds the closest senior football stadiums in the United Kingdom. The area around both grounds is known as 'Tannadice Street' and 'Sandeman Street' and on derby days the concentration of supporters in such a small area creates an unmistakable football atmosphere. Dundee United enjoyed their greatest years in the 1980s under manager Jim McLean, winning the Scottish championship in 1983, reaching the European Cup semi-final in 1984, and defeating Barcelona in the UEFA Cup.
The site now known as Tannadice has football history stretching back to 1882, when it was known as Clepington Park and used by various Dundee clubs. Dundee United (then Dundee Hibernian) took up residence in 1909 and changed their name to Dundee United in 1923. The stadium's record attendance of 28,000 was set on 16 November 1966 for a match against Barcelona in the Fairs Cup. Major redevelopment between 1992 and 1997 — triggered by the Taylor Report — transformed Tannadice into its current all-seater configuration, with the impressive two-tier George Fox Stand as the centrepiece. The Jerry Kerr Stand was renamed in 2003 in tribute to one of the club's most significant figures. In 2003-04 a main stand on the south side was named the Jim McLean Stand, honouring the iconic manager. CalForth Construction became the stadium's naming rights sponsor in a partnership that has also included exterior repainting and a new beer garden and lounge.
The Derby Day atmosphere at Tannadice when Dundee United face Dundee FC is one of Scottish football's most intense experiences. The proximity of the two grounds and the concentration of rival supporters in the Tannadice Street area creates an extraordinary pre-match atmosphere. European nights at Tannadice have generated some of the most memorable moments in Dundee United's history. The Arab Army (as Dundee United's supporters are known) are passionate and vocally committed.
