Xfinity Mobile Arena β formerly known as Wells Fargo Center β stands as the cornerstone of Philadelphia's sports culture, serving as the home of the Philadelphia 76ers since 1996 while embodying the gritty, passionate soul of one of America's most devoted sports cities. Opened in 1996 at a cost of $210 million on the former site of John F. Kennedy Stadium in South Philadelphia, the arena officially became Xfinity Mobile Arena in August 2025 following a naming rights agreement with Comcast's Xfinity Mobile service. With an NBA seating capacity of 20,478 β making it one of the largest arenas in professional basketball β the venue creates a thunderous atmosphere that visiting teams consistently cite as one of the most hostile environments in the league. The arena features 126 luxury suites, 1,880 club-box seats, and premium hospitality spaces including the Sharecare Social Club, Chase Concert Club, and Delta SKY360Β° Club. Anchoring the South Philadelphia Sports Complex alongside Lincoln Financial Field (Eagles) and Citizens Bank Park (Phillies), the arena is also home to the Philadelphia Flyers (NHL) and Philadelphia Wings (NLL). A new $1.3 billion replacement arena was announced in January 2025, expected to open by 2030 β but until then, Xfinity Mobile Arena remains the beating heart of Philadelphia basketball. The arena has hosted landmark events including the 2000 Republican National Convention, the 2016 Democratic National Convention, and three games of the 2001 NBA Finals.
The arena now known as Xfinity Mobile Arena has one of the most complex naming histories in professional sports, having operated under five different names since opening. The venue was built on the former site of John F. Kennedy Stadium in South Philadelphia β the same historic area that houses Lincoln Financial Field and Citizens Bank Park. Opening in 1996 at a cost of $210 million, it was originally known locally as "Spectrum II" during planning, as the 76ers and Flyers were moving from the neighbouring Spectrum. The formal name sequence: CoreStates Center (1996β1998), First Union Center (1998β2003), Wachovia Center (2003β2010), Wells Fargo Center (2010β2025), and Xfinity Mobile Arena (2025βpresent). The name changes were driven entirely by successive banking industry mergers and acquisitions β CoreStates was acquired by First Union, which merged with Wachovia, which was then acquired by Wells Fargo in 2008. The arena hosted the 2000 Republican National Convention and 2016 Democratic National Convention, making it one of only a handful of sports venues to host major presidential nominating conventions in consecutive election cycles. Three games of the 2001 NBA Finals were played at the venue. In January 2025, plans were announced for a new $1.3 billion replacement arena expected by 2030, ensuring the current building's era will be its last.
Attending a 76ers game at Xfinity Mobile Arena is an exercise in passionate, uncompromising Philadelphia sports culture. The city's reputation for demanding, vocal, and knowledgeable fandom is on full display on game nights in South Philly. Pre-game, fans congregate at Chickie's & Pete's for crab fries and cheesesteaks β an essential Philadelphia ritual. The arena's large capacity means the noise generated by a full house is considerable, and the South Philly faithful are particularly vocal during big rivalry games against the Boston Celtics, Milwaukee Bucks, and Miami Heat. The South Philadelphia Sports Complex creates a unique atmosphere where three of America's great sports franchises (76ers, Flyers, Eagles) share a campus, and on dual-event nights the area takes on a festival feel. For the most authentic Philly sports experience, attend a playoff game or a rivalry matchup β you will experience one of the NBA's most intensely partisan home atmospheres.
